Fundraising News From Around the World

Hendersonville, NC: The first Mad Mountain Mud Run, a fundraiser for Hands on! A Child's Gallery, was so successful that there was no doubt it would become a yearly event. This year the course will be filled with mud pits, creeks, gooey crawls, and obstacles to climb; St. Peter, MN: The principal at South Elementary Early Learning Center wore a red 1981 bridesmaid’s gown after the students and staff exceeded their $7500 goal for this year’s Jump Rope for Heart for the American Heart Association; Kingwood, TX: Like the infamous movie, “The Hunger Games,” guests selected a lottery ticket which determined where they sat and what food they would sample from local restaurants. They had no idea where they were sitting and what they would eat. The games benefited a local non-profit that subsidizes activities for children, mentors teens and provides after-school programs for elementary-aged children; University Park, PA: Months of organizing gave way to dancing as thousands of Penn State University students renewed their fight against childhood cancer by ushering in the 41st annual Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon featuring 710 dancers who persevered for 46 straight hours. The fundraiser — the largest student-run philanthropy in the world - was to help families and children by covering medical bills not paid for by insurance and by advancing cancer research; Casper, WY: It was a wild idea. Take eight acres of good farmland, plant it with corn, cut it into a maze and hope people show up. one family decided to build it and donate whatever proceeds they made to ARC of Natrona County and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni Association. The people came; they created a steady cloud of dust down the dirt road leading to the farm. When the dust cleared, they had $108,000 to split between the two organizations; Naperville, IL: Singing valentines are a fundraiser for the Chorus of DuPage, a nonprofit men's barbershop chorus. The groups travel across DuPage County and into nearby areas to deliver unforgettable valentine experiences; and Jamestown, NY: Every year, for the past five years, the Chautauqua County Humane Society has played host to a fundraiser that features the hottest dogs and the coolest cats in the area. The fundraiser, entitled "Hot Dogs, Cool Cats Photo Contest," is an online program that allows users to vote on photos and stories submitted by area residents. The pet which wins the contest will become the CCHS's pet of the year, and will be one of the top 12 pets featured in the calendar that is slated for a late February release. The program is neat for a couple of reasons; one being that people are so proud of their pets and their pet photos. When you read the little stories that are posted with the photos, many of these animals were originally adopted from the shelter, another shelter or were rescued in some way. So, it's nice to go through these stories and see how many people have had good results from adopting or rescuing an animal. The program serves as a fundraiser by allowing users to make monetary donations via a voting platform located on CCHS's website. Proceeds from the contest will be applied to the cost of caring for homeless and neglected pets awaiting adoption. More fundraiser news can be found on our Facebook page.

Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month

Frog Jumping Contest: In Plainfield, Connecticut, they didn’t enter the competition with the pageantry that preceded London’s Olympic games, but Hopper and Hoppy found an enthusiastic audience in Plainfield’s 13th annual frog jumping contest. Organizers said more than 70 people took part in the fundraiser to benefit the First Congregational Church of Plainfield. The event brings thousands of dollars into the church to help pay for Sunday school programming costs. Many participants arrived with coolers full of freshly caught frogs of all sizes. Per tradition, competitors bring their animals to one of two large circles in the center of the park and face off in groups of three, separated by age. To get the frogs moving, people can stomp the ground on either side of the frogs, blow on them or use virtually any other humane means to spur them into action. Touching them is off-limits. Officials require that no frogs be harmed during the contest, and all are released back into the wild after their moment in the sun. Many people take their frog-catching routine seriously, refusing to disclose locations. one participant said he recognizes a good frog by “how hard they are to catch".

Non-Profit In The Spotlight

Furkids provides a cage-free, no-kill shelter for rescued animals where they can experience the best care in a loving environment until they are adopted. In 2002, Founder Samantha Shelton found a stray mother cat with kittens. Unable to find a shelter that would take them in, she established Furkids, which began as a network of foster homes conducting adoptions through Petsmart. We rescued 216 animals in our first year. As our rescue program expands, so does the cost of providing thorough care for our rescue cats, kittens, and dogs. Please support our cause today by making a donation, becoming a volunteer, making a tribute in honor of a special pet or person in your life, or by adopting one of our wonderful cats or dogs. Each year we rescue, shelter, sterilize, rehabilitate, and place hundreds of animals in permanent, loving homes.

Why They Say That

Humble Pie - The expression to eat humble pie was once to eat umble pie. The umbles were the intestines or less appetizing parts of an animal and servants and other lower class people ate them. So if a deer was killed, the rich ate venison and those of low status ate umble pie. In time it became corrupted to eat humble pie and came to mean to debase yourself or act with humility.
