P&G recognized with top honor — 25th anniversary Spirit of America award

In celebration of its 125th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Spirit of America® awards program, United Way Worldwide recognized P&G with the 2012 Spirit of America award for philanthropy, volunteer efforts and community impact. Publix Super Markets, Bank of America, Deloitte LLP, Microsoft Corporation, General Motors, Wells Fargo, and ITW received Summit awards.

 

John Pacheco, U.S. Bank Vice President and Director, U.S. Bank Foundation, and Brian Gallagher, United Way Worldwide president and CEO, presented the awards at the 2012 Community Leaders Conference awards dinner this month. Winners received coverage in the Wall Street Journal, Yahoo, CNBC, MSN, Enquirer, Chicago Tribune, Charlotte Observer, Seattle Times, The Ledger, Orlando Business Journal, Cincinnati Herald, The Tennessean, Business Courier, Henry Daily Herald, TechSolve, and more, plus hundreds of other news sites, business journals and publications along with a full-page color recognition ad to run this summer in Bloomberg Businessweek. In addition, Brian Gallagher and P&G's Christopher Hassall appeared multiple times on the Las Vegas Clear Channel and Times Square Reuters signs.

 

 

Barry Salzberg to chair United Way Worldwide's Board of Trustees

Barry Salzberg, Global Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL), was elected to a two-year term as chairman of United Way Worldwide's Board of Trustees. For more than 25 years, DTTL and its member firms have supported United Way around the world through pro bono consulting, workplace giving campaigns, and direct engagement in community initiatives, including employee volunteerism. Global Corporate Leaders play key roles in Community Leaders Conference

From opening keynote to closing remarks, GCL companies provided leadership and best practices at the Community Leaders Conference. Michael Robinson, Director of Corporate Citizenship with Nationwide Insurance, joined the opening keynote panel with Brian Gallagher, discussing working together and collective impact. John Pacheco, U.S. Bancorp Vice President and Director, U.S. Bank Foundation, announced the 2012 Spirit of America® and Summit Award winners during United Way's 125th awards celebration dinner. At the Opportunity Town Hall, Jon Campbell, Wells Fargo EVP and Director of Social Responsibility Group, joined the Income panel and announced a $5 million grant to United Way Worldwide to develop a national Financial Capability Network to increase the financial stability of lower- to moderate-income working families. In addition, many corporate partners presented during learning sessions, including: Beyond the Borders - A look at Philanthropy Outside the United States: Target and P&G Latin America and Best Practice Exchange to Tap Corporate Leaders: 3M, AT&T, Bank of America, Nationwide Insurance, P&G, Publix Super Markets, Inc., UPS, Wells Fargo, Whirlpool Corporation and Williams.

 

 

GCL Advisory Council — all business by day, fun by night

Prior to the United Way Community Leaders Conference in Nashville, the GCL Advisory Council met, including representatives from 3M, AT&T, Bank of America, Caterpillar Inc., Comcast, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Eaton Corporation, Eli Lilly and Company, FedEx Corporation, General Mills, IBM, ITW, jcpenney, Kellogg Company, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Medtronic, Inc., Nationwide Insurance, P&G, Target, Texas Instruments, The Dow Chemical Company, The Mosaic Company, UPS, Walmart, Wells Fargo, Whirlpool Corporation, and Williams. Advisory Council Chair Cindy Kleven from 3M led the group in discussions around best practices from 2011 campaigns and Spirit of America and Summit award winners, recommendations for the Fortune 500 Taskforce, vendor discussions and campaign visioning for the future, plus updates on United Way's worldwide progress. Some members were found hamming it up after hours at the GCL photo booth.

 

 

Take action and tweet for change on June 21

This year's Day of Action is unique because it occurs during the 125th anniversary of the United Way movement. To celebrate this milestone, join us on June 21 by hosting a Day of Action focused on engaging individuals in volunteering or advocacy projects that help advance our work in education, income and health. Host an E-Day of Action connected to United Way's national effort to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to help improve students' academic success. Increase visibility with online and social media communication. Take part in The Big Tweet at 1:25 your local time or anytime that day in honor of United Way's 125th. Tweet a statement about how you LIVE UNITED using the hashtag #iamthechange. Make sure to include pictures and videos as well as @UnitedWay #LIVEUNITED. The goal of The Big Tweet is to engage and inspire individuals in a mass simultaneous social media event.

Celebrate 125 years of United Way by taking LIVE UNITED to the streets

Show the power of living united by creating visible displays around the world. Dust off your best ideas for street-level, guerilla marketing, and create a LIVE UNITED display that gets attention in your community. Photograph the project and submit it by e-mail to United Way Worldwide to share throughout the Network as well as in a commemorative photo book. When submitting your photo, please include signed photo release forms for anyone pictured, as well as a brief description of the project and your contact information.

 

 

Top 15 GCL campaigns provide new dollars to communities

The top 15 Global Corporate Leadership (GCL) campaigns increased by 3%—resulting in $13.5 million in new dollars for investments in education, income and health throughout the United Way network in 2011.

Ford drives support to United Way

Consumers who recently test drove the new 2013 Lincoln MKS also supported United Way. Ford Motor Company provided $150,000 to select dealers in 40 markets to fund $20 gifts to United Way (up to $1,000 per dealership) for each test drive.

Oui, oui we're heading to Paris
On June 8, the United Way Tocqueville (United Way in France) will host a breakfast for local leaders in France to discuss partnership opportunities. Established in 2008, United Way Tocqueville works to improve the quality of life of the neediest members of the community by leveraging financial and volunteer resources in support of local social solidarity initiatives in France. So far Airbus, AT&T, Deloitte LLP, Eli Lilly and Company, FedEx Corporation, General Mills, Inc., KPMG, HSBC Bank USA, Microsoft Corporation, PwC, UPS and Xerox Corporation plan to attend, among other local companies. United Way's TEAM NFL Launches with National Youth Empowerment Summit

Next month—in conjunction with United Way's nationwide Day of Action—United Way Worldwide is hosting a Youth Empowerment Summit with National Football League (NFL) players from across the country. This event represents the official launch of United Way's TEAM NFL initiative—a core group of college-educated, civic-minded NFL players committed to helping United Way in its effort to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors.

 

On Day of Action, participants will head to DC to visit their local congressional representatives and then come back together on the steps of Capitol Hill for the “BIG” TWEET—United Way's invitation to volunteers, partners, supporters, friends, family and staff around the world to join a simultaneous Twitter event to make a splash in social media.

 

 

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference lands in Music City

The Asia-Pacific Regional Conference was held this month in Nashville as part of the overall Community Leaders Conference. This year's conference focused on the development of a regional initiative around youth. Attendees also had opportunities to exchange ideas and develop goals for the region that included corporate engagement strategies.

 

 

Voices for the Common Good: The World Speaks Out on Opportunity

United Way is excited to release “Voices for the Common Good: The World Speaks Out on Opportunity” — a new report based on more than 120 community conversations in a dozen countries. In these conversations, everyday people from all walks of life talked about their aspirations for their communities, the challenges they see in creating opportunity, and what it will take to make real progress in the areas central to a good life — education, income, and health. Over half of Americans use social media to connect with companies

According to the Cone Business in Social Media Study, sixty percent of Americans use social media, and of those, 59 percent interact with companies on social media websites. The study goes on to share that 93 percent of social media users believe a company should have a presence in social media, while an overwhelming 85 percent believe a company should not only be present but also interact with its consumers via social media.
