與野 정치인 잇달아 피습...증오정치에 휩쓸려버린 국내정치

신년부터 한국이 증오의 격랑에 휩싸였습니다. 지난 25일 오후 6시경 배현진 국민의힘 국회의원이 강남 신사동 모처에서 피습당하는 일이 벌어졌습니다. 이재명 더불어민주당 대표가 피습된 지 23일만에 여당 국회의원도 표적이 된 겁니다.

테러는 정당화할 수 없는 명백한 범죄행위입니다. 마음에 들지 않는다고 생떼도 이런 식으로 쓰면 들어줄 것도 안 들어줍니다. 동시에 테러 사건에서 진영정치에 매몰돼 있는 한국사회의 어둡고 폭력적인 단면을 본 것 같아 부끄러움과 씁쓸함이 남습니다.

민주주의 국가에서 우리가 지향해야 하는 정치는 비판과 심판입니다. 비판은 비난이 되어선 안되고, 심판은 주먹이 아닌 표(票)로 해야 합니다. 그렇기 때문에 공인 신분인 정치인은 비판과 견제에서 자유로울 수 없으며 유권자는 선거를 통해 이들을 다스립니다. 다들 잘 알고 계시는 내용입니다.

답답한 것은 사실입니다. 정당끼리 치받는 내용을 살펴보면 10년전과 비교해 나아진 점은 있나 싶은 대목도 보이실 테지요. 지난 총선 때 등장한 위성정당을 떠올려보면 어쩌면 퇴보했을 지도 모릅니다. 제자리걸음을 하고 있다면 다행이려나요.

민주주의는 '민중주의'이기도 합니다. 혼자보다는 둘, 둘보다는 셋일수록 강해집니다. 집단이 내는 목소리를 당해낼 개인은 없습니다. 하지만 집단이 방향성을 잃고 극단적인 입장에 서면, 무리, 떼, 훌리건이 됩니다. 혐오정치를 부추기는 온라인 커뮤니티나 여론을 잘못된 방향으로 선동하는 개인 채널들이 그렇습니다.

레드라인을 밟지 않는 한도에서 정치가 작동하는 것이 그 나라 정치의 실력이자 수준입니다. 그리고 정치수준은 정치인과 유권자 모두에게 해당하는 말입니다. 정치가 답답스럽다고 여의도를 향해 손가락질하는 우리의 수준은 10년 전과 비교해 얼마나 향상됐을까요? 여전히 우리는 소문과 풍문에 부화뇌동하고 있지는 않는지요. 보고 싶은 것만 보고, 믿고 싶은 내용만 선별적으로 믿고 있는지는 않으신지요. 테러를 저지른 습격범만을 아웃라이어라고 생각해서는 안될 것입니다.

이날 정치권은 혐오와 대립을 조장하는 극단 정치에 대해 자성하겠다고 밝혔습니다. 우리는 더욱 균형잡힌 시선을 갖춰야 합니다. 음식을 골고루 섭취해야 건강해지듯 같은 주제를 언론사들이 각자 어떻게 해석하는지 찬찬히 비교해보시는 것도 좋은 방법입니다. 자극적인 맛은 입맛을 빠르게 사로잡을 수 있지만 결국 미각을 버릴 뿐입니다. 한 가지 맛만 고집하는 것도 인식의 지평을 넓힐 기회를 낭비하는 셈입니다.

해묵은 진영갈등, 올해는 좀 해소할 수 있을까요? 그리고 화는, 그릇된 과시욕은 집에서 자체적으로 푸시거나 안으로 삭였으면 좋겠습니다. 이런 방식은 잘못됐습니다. 또 이런 일이 나타나지 않기만을 바랄 뿐입니다.

Ruling and opposition politicians attacked one after another...domestic politics swept up in hate politics

Since the beginning of the new year, South Korea has been engulfed in a tidal wave of hate. On January 25, at around 6 p.m., Bae Hyun-jin, a member of parliament for the People's Power, was attacked at his home in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam. Just 23 days after Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was attacked, another member of the ruling party was targeted.

Terrorism is a clear criminal act that cannot be justified. If you don't like it, you can't use it, and you won't be listened to. At the same time, I am left with a sense of shame and bitterness because I see in the terrorist attack a dark and violent cross-section of Korean society that is mired in factional politics.

In a democracy, the politics we should aim for is criticism and judgment. Criticism should not become condemnation, and judgment should be done with votes, not fists. That is why politicians, as public figures, are not free from criticism and checks and balances, and voters govern them through elections. We all know this stuff.

It's frustrating. If you look at the way political parties are treated, you might wonder if we've gotten any better than we were a decade ago. If you think about the satellite parties that emerged in the last general election, we've probably regressed. If we're staying the same, we're lucky.

Democracy is also about 'folkism'. We are stronger in twos and threes than we are alone. No individual can overpower the voice of the collective, but when the collective loses direction and takes extreme positions, it becomes a herd, a swarm, a hooligan - think online communities that promote hateful politics or private channels that sway public opinion in the wrong direction.

The extent to which politics works without stepping on red lines is the skill and quality of a country's politics, and that's true for both politicians and voters. How far have we come from a decade ago when it comes to pointing fingers at the other side for making politics frustrating? Do we still feed on rumors and gossip, do we still see what we want to see, do we still selectively believe what we want to believe, do we still think that the only outliers are those who commit terrorist attacks?

On this day, the political establishment has said it will take a hard look at extreme politics that promotes hate and confrontation. We need to develop a more balanced view. Just as you're healthier when you eat a balanced diet, it's good to compare and contrast how different media outlets interpret the same topic. Pungent flavors can quickly engage your taste buds, but they'll eventually abandon you. Sticking to one flavor is also a wasted opportunity to expand your horizons.

I hope you're able to resolve some of those old factions this year, and that you can keep your anger and misplaced exhibitionism to yourself at home. It's wrong, and I hope it doesn't happen again.
