5K Run/Walk to Benefit Ovarian Cancer Research
by Sandra Sims on 10 May 2007 in: Athletic Events, 5 Ks, Causes, Cancer, Ovarian Cancer
The 2nd annual Pamela J. Wilcox 5k Run/Walk is taking place this Saturday, May 12th, 2007. All proceeds will benefit the Lynne Cohen Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research.
According to event director Dawn Wilcox, “Last year we had about 105 participants for the run/walk. I am expecting at least 150 this year. This year we have received most of our revenue from sponsorships and registrations.”
The tribute funds go specifically to the research of a blood test to detect Ovarian cancer in its earliest stage. The race is being held in the small town of Corunna, Michigan at Hugh McCurdy Park. This year the race registration includes a t-shirt, pre-race refreshments, and a lunch buffet.

Run Walk Ride Conference
by Sandra Sims on 09 May 2007 in: General
Next week I’ll be heading to New York City to attend the first of its kind Run Walk Ride Fundraising Conference. There will be presentations from charities who plan some of the most popular athletic events including Relay for Life.
Every year the number of charity athletic events and participants grows even stronger. It’s easy to see why — these events appeal to the public on a many levels. Walk events are usually short distances that nearly anyone young or old can join just for fun. Races appeal to the competitive types, and many events allow both runners and walkers so people can just do their thing.
There’s no telling what great ideas and collaborations will spring from this conference. I think it will result in great things for both the non profits and the many volunteers who participate in these events.
Fundraising Tips from a Train to End Stroke Participant
by Laura Munion on 09 May 2007 in: Athletic Events, Fundraising, Causes, Stroke
A few years ago I decided to undertake a fundraising project: the American Stroke Association’s Train to End Stroke program. Not only would I be doing a good deed, but I would also be going to Hawaii!
I didn’t think that fundraising would be that difficult. Since this was my first foray into fundraising I learned many things from some pros, but most things I learned the hard way. I was resourceful at finding good fundraising opportunities but not on actually implementing them. (more…)

by Sandra Sims on 08 May 2007 in: General, Walk-A-Thons
“Walk a mile in my shoes” took on a whole new meaning at one of the more unusual charity walk fundraisers that I’ve heard of. The Milwaukee event challenged several hundred men to walk in women’s high heel shoes for one mile around a track. The event benefited three area organizations that provide domestic violence and sexual assault prevention programs. (more…)
