MASTERING THE NEW MEDIA MIX By Mal Warwick
One of the hallmarks of our age is the continuing explosion of new communications technologies. Surely, there's no end in sight to the spectacular inventiveness (and boundless greed) that has given rise to an unending stream of ever-more-amazing gadgets and devices.
Today, at least in theory, the enterprising fundraiser can use any or all of the following channels of communications with her donors, prospects, or the general public:

THE POWER OF ORATORY By Deborah Block and Paul Karps
Fundraisers like to talk about how a direct mail letter should be a one-on-one, personal communication between the signer and reader. We wholeheartedly agree.
But when it actually comes to putting our words together -- to make the letter as emotionally compelling and motivating as possible -- we rely on the power of oratory as our wordsmithing guide.

ASK MAL
Mal Warwick is waiting to answer your fundraising questions -- just go to www.malwarwick.com/askmal.html. Here's a recent question from a reader:
HOW LONG SHOULD A YEAR-END APPEAL LETTER BE?
Mal answers: A year-end appeal -- like any other fundraising letter -- needs to be as long as necessary to make the case for giving. There are circumstances in which a one-page letter will suffice. But that's typically not the case in a year-end appeal...

STEVE HITCHCOCK'S MAILBAG Steve Hitchcock offers his opinion on whether peel-and-stick stickers should be used in direct mail response devices.
I don't recommend this technique for your organization's fundraising appeals. There are a few instances where these peel-and-stick stickers might actually work, but I'd be willing to bet that your organization isn't one of those that could take advantage of this technique used by commercial direct mailers. Let me explain why I think that's the case.

FEATURED CLIENT OF THE MONTH: Bread for the World
Bread for the World is a bipartisan citizens' movement that seeks justice for hungry people in the United States and around the world. Its 50,000 members lobby Congress to reform and expand time-tested initiatives that give hungry people the tools and resources to feed themselves and their families. Through its annual legislative campaigns -- supported by "Offerings of Letters" in thousands of churches across the country -- Bread for the World has helped persuade Congress to establish and strengthen the Child Survival Fund, debt relief for poor countries, the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program, and school lunches.
Bread for the World has been a client of Mal Warwick & Associates since 1989, and we have helped coordinate over 500 projects on their behalf -- with an emphasis on membership acquisition and the recruitment of monthly donors.
