Opportunity Nation meets to accelerate economic mobility in America
It's no secret that today only six percent of children born to parents at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder make it to the top. In fact, studies now show children in many European countries have greater economic mobility than those in the United States. These statistics tell us that the American Dream our country was built upon is at risk and in need of a significant jumpstart.
Enter Opportunity Nation. United Way Worldwide is a partner in Opportunity Nation, a national campaign to mobilize business leaders, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, faith communities, and citizens to create innovative policies and programs that promote opportunity and economic mobility in the United States. They've hosted regional opportunity summits on college and university campuses across the country; met with dozens of elected officials to sound the alarm about the declining mobility in our country; and are engaging with political candidates across the divide about the role they can play in advancing mobility. United Way Bengaluru launched a Born Learning initiative earlier this month focused on the importance of nutrition. “The Born Learning campaign is truly holistic in nature. Fifty beneficiary children from QWARIDS, a partner NGO, were present with their parent/guardian along with nearly 200 participants, which included college students from Kristu Jayanthi, CMR, St .Joseph's College, NGO partners and corporate volunteers from Deloitte LLP, Hitachi Consulting and Target. Infographic illustrates the pipeline to prison
A new infographic by Community Coalition helps show how inadequate supports in school and foster care can steer young people into the criminal justice system. The coalition contends that the education and foster care systems create a pipeline to prison for many youth by failing to effectively connect them to supports such as continuing education, job training and the labor market. See a short summary and a link to the image here.
