Celebrating 125 years of United Way is as
easy as 1, 2, 3

As we celebrate 125 years of the United Way movement, everyone is invited to join hands to improve the education, income and health of our communities. This milestone is more than an opportunity to honor our past. It’s a time to say thank you and bring LIVE UNITED to life in your community.

Create

  • Be part of the LIVE UNITED Street Project. Dust off your best ideas for street-level, guerilla marketing, and create a display that gets attention in your community, like a LIVE UNITED “can”struction as part of a food drive or join colleagues wearing LIVE UNITED shirts to form the words LIVE UNITED. Make sure you photograph the LIVE UNITED project and submit it to United Way Worldwide so we can share the great projects throughout the Network, as well as in a commemorative photo book.

Talk

  • Host community conversations. Give a BIG thanks to your employee volunteers, donors and campaign team. Get people talking through brown bag lunches or sponsored breaks, social media, and voice mail messages discussing education, income and health.

2-1-1 plays key role in recent nationwide disaster responses

Wildfires, tropical flooding and storms impacted major portions of US during the past month. In response, the Colorado 211 Collaborative answered all wildfire related calls cooperating with United Ways in affected areas. Dealing with record flooding, United Way of Escambia County in Pensacola, Florida convened community agencies, a number of whom were heavily impacted by the severe flooding, to coordinate community response, while the 2-1-1 call center answered over 200 disaster related calls in the 10-day period surrounding the floods. Derecho, a long-lasting line of thunderstorms producing a large swath of significant wind damage, wreaked havoc on communities in New Jersey, Ohio, West Virginia, Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia. 2-1-1 calls centers played a key role freeing up 911 emergency lines. Airbus' Flying Challenge touches down in 5 countries

United Way Tocqueville France and the Airbus Corporate Foundation launched a key education partnership—Flying Challenge—to support underserved middle school students at a Toulouse, France middle school through a mentoring and tutoring initiative. More than 150,000 kids drop out of school annually in France. The program is designed to equip young people with the skills to tackle challenges in school, work and life in order to achieve their full potential. United Way France, the project facilitator, worked with Airbus Corporate Foundation to pair volunteers with students in Toulouse. As encouragement for participating in the program, Airbus Corporate Foundation offered students a communal flight experience, in support of the organization's youth development goal, and all the students took part. The pilot will expand this year to serve more youth in the Toulouse area along with launching a U.S.-based pilot in Wichita, Kansas. In 2013, Airbus Corporate Foundation plans to expand the reach of the Flying Challenge to support youth in Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.

AT&T rules Nashville

Teachers spend an average of $40 of their own money each month on classroom supplies. With the help of partners and volunteers, United Ways around the country are ensuring kids and teachers have the essential tools for learning through Stuff the Bus initiatives. Companies like AT&T are having fun while providing these much-needed tools for educational success. AT&T/CWA employees were challenged to collect enough rulers to match the height of the AT&T “Batman Building” (617ft high) as part of United Way of Metropolitan Nashville’s Stuff the Bus Downtown Challenge. AT&T/CWA doubled that challenge and collected over 1,200 rulers to help United Way of Metropolitan Nashville fill 3,400 backpacks!

BMO Financial Group joins United Way to recruit 3,000 volunteer readers, tutors and mentors in Milwaukee

United Way of Greater Milwaukee launched an initiative this month to recruit 3,000 new volunteer readers, tutors and mentors by 2014 during a special “Brewers Hill Literacy Day.” The event coincided with United Way’s Intern Day of Action. Nearly 250 college interns from area companies including BMO Financial Group were paired with more than 250 children ages 3-16 from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee and COA Youth & Family Centers. The young mentors and children spent the afternoon reading and participating in interactive literacy-based games led by First Stage Children’s Theater. Each child received a free book to take home, courtesy of Next Door Foundation. The event was designed to help raise awareness about the important role adults play in a child’s academic success through reading, tutoring and mentoring.

Help us cut by half the number of young people who drop out of high school by 2018. Take the pledge to become a volunteer reader, tutor or mentor.
