Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month
Night in Jail: Volunteers in Adams County, Pennsylvania, paid $40 for an all-inclusive stay in a new, state-of-the-art prison as a fundraiser for the Adams County Homeless Shelter, but it was also a training exercise for the prison staff. The inmates arrived by noon on Saturday to be signed in and issued their essential orange jumpsuits. After that, they were provided their meals on a prison time table and attended the same educational sessions offered to real prisoners by prison staff. Release was at noon Sunday. Overnight guests stayed in a minimum security area in cells that are like rooms. Accommodations were made for privacy. The roster of inmates was a mix of men and women, a diverse blend of college professors, people who conduct prison ministries for area churches, and residents of other areas who simply thought it would be an excellent opportunity to experience prison life - without breaking a law. |

Interesting or Fun Facts
John Lloyd Wright, son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, invented Lincoln Logs in 1916. John's inspiration for Lincoln Logs came during a trip to Tokyo during which he and his father were hired to work on the famous Imperial Hotel. When he saw how the beams in the hotel ceiling were interlocked with each other, he came up with the idea which he named Lincoln Logs to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the US Civil War, during which Abraham Lincoln had served as President. Over time, Lincoln became known as our "Log Cabin President" due in large part to the enduring popularity of John Lloyd Wright's construction toy which bears his name. |
