Fundraising News From Around the World Edmonton, AB: A group of 1,400 Southside students lined up and linked hands on the sidewalks, creating a giant human chain for a unique food fundraiser. Canned goods were passed from person-to-person across a distance of over one mile. The human chain approach to the food fundraiser was meant to show how all students in that community are connected; Sunbury, OH: Bikers hold charity ride and poker run fundraiser for Ohio Fallen heroes; Green Valley, CA: Ice cream parlor fundraiser supports heart surgery for 5-year old; Sausalito, CA: Nineteen bay area restaurants are part of a national fundraiser to help the Gulf Coast fishing industry by donating a portion of their proceeds from June 10 – 12 to the Greater New Orleans Foundation; Centerville, OH: City staff rides in stationary bike ride fundraiser for cancer research; Pittsburgh, PA: Pre-wedding carwash bash in lieu of having bachelor and bachelorette parties raises funds for community outreach. In lieu of favors, the bride and groom to be chose to make donations to the food pantry and Music for Life, in honor of their guests; Durham, NC: Women’s arm wrestling fundraiser benefits crisis response center; Westlake Village, CA: Middle school's Play-a-thon fundraiser features student musicians performing 100 pieces of continuous music; Lyndhurst, NJ: Boot camp fundraiser in the park supports education fund; Wesley Chapel, FL: Goodwill wedding gown gala fundraiser features new designer gowns marked down at least 75 percent; Oroville, CA: High school band holds "Poo Pie Bingo" fundraiser with Misty the horse on a fenced-in portion of a field that was marked with white squares on the ground. Squares were sold for $10, with the owner of the box where Misty went to powder her nose receiving 10% of the raised money; and Cleveland, OH: Special Olympics fundraiser features plane pull with teams of 20 people pulling a Boeing 737 12 feet. |

Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month Plane Pull: A plane pull can generate plenty of good publicity and raise lots of money for your organization or a worthy cause. Pulls are done by teams that can compete in several categories. The Variety Children's Charities in Memphis sponsors an annual pull with teams consisting of 20 members who pull a 155,000 pound Boeing 727 jet airplane a distance of 12 feet! Their categories include: the fastest pull; team with lightest combined body weight; top women's team; team with the best costume, theme, or creative idea; best improved time from their last competition; and challenge trophies between business competitors. Non-Profit In The Spotlight Deborah Heart and Lung Center was established in 1922 as a tuberculosis sanitarium and pulmonary center. Legend has it that Deborah's rural Burlington County location was the key to recovery because of its therapeutic Jersey pine barren air. In reality, thousands of TB patients were medically treated and successfully cured by Deborah physicians. With the development of antibiotic medications, which eradicated TB, Deborah began expanding its focus to other chest diseases. In 1958, Dr. Charles Bailey, a pioneer in heart surgery, performed the first open heart surgery at Deborah. The specialty of cardiac diseases was immediately embraced and Deborah evolved into the only cardiac and pulmonary specialty hospital in New Jersey. |

Interesting or Fun Facts Since 1925, Goodyear blimps have adorned the skies as very visible corporate icons of the world's largest tire and rubber company. In the 1930s, Goodyear built two giant rigid airships for the Navy. The aircraft measured more than two football fields in length and needed 6.5 million cubic feet of helium to become airborne at its gross weight of more than 400,000 pounds. The USS Akron and USS Macon were designed as aerial aircraft carriers and could launch and retrieve specially equipped planes while in flight. Although a good concept, sadly, both airships were lost in storms within two years of going into service, effectively ending the era of the rigid airships. In the 1940s and 1950s, Goodyear built a series of large surveillance airships used to protect merchant fleets along the coast. They also served as early warning radar stations. Some of these airships could stay aloft for more than a week at a time. Today, Goodyear operates three airships in the United States -- the Spirit of America, based in the City of Carson, California; the Spirit of Goodyear, based in Akron, Ohio; and the Spirit of Innovation, based in Pompano Beach, Florida. |
