Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month

One animal shelter put a Pet Remembrance Tree in the center court of a local mall near Christmas.  For each $5.00 donation, they illuminated a light for someone's pet --- a red one "in honor of" and a white one "in memory of". They asked for a picture of the pet and hung it with a red or white ribbon. In addition to the fixed $5.00 donations, they had a fish bowl out for general donations. They also took a thick foam board and put them on wreath stands .. a red board for the honored pets and a white board for a memorialized pets .. with the names listed on each board. They earned over $3,000 from the tree and fish bowl. Twice a week, they updated the pictures on the tree and names on the boards. They had a stand in front of the tree explaining what it was for and kept forms on that stand for people to fill out. They would simply put their name, the name of the pet, whether it was in memory of or honor of, etc. Then they would send it to the address at the bottom of the form. The really big money maker was something they almost did not do. They told people that if they wanted to buy a light in honor or memory of someone else's pet, they would send that person an acknowledgement card. Many people made donations like that for Christmas presents. In addition, when the person received a card, they often turned around and made a donation either for their pet or someone else's. They initially thought it would be necessary to have someone at the tree at all times, but knew they could not do it. Turned out, they did not need anyone there except on weekend nights when the mall was really crowded.

Non-Profit In The Spotlight

Keep America Beautiful was formed in 1953, long before being "green" was fashionable, when a group of corporate and civic leaders met in New York City to discuss a revolutionary idea bringing the public and private sectors together to develop and promote a national cleanliness ethic. We believe that each of us holds an obligation to preserve and protect our environment. Through our everyday choices and actions, we collectively have a huge impact on our world. It's really a simple concept, but one with far reaching effects. Keep America Beautiful follows a practical approach that unites citizens, businesses and government to find solutions that advance our core issues of preventing litter, reducing waste, and beautifying communities. The diverse American landscape consists of many different "community environments," each with their own interconnected needs and challenges. With a national network of nearly 1000 local affiliates and participating organizations, we combine education with hands-on stewardship to address the needs of communities on an intensely local and effective level.
