Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month

The Phi Sigma Pi at Missouri State University held a Rent-A-Puppy fundraiser and rented out puppies on campus for playtime at $5 per 30 minutes. The behind the scenes work started with contacting the humane society and explaining to them what they planned to do and asked them if they could come out and bring a bunch of puppies that they could "borrow" for 5 hours. Campus rules required that all animals be on a leash, so that needed to be planned for. They booked a location outside the student union. And then there was the advertising. They put up flyers around campus 1 week in advance and made a Facebook Event group and invited all their friends to the event about 2-3 weeks in advance. Advertisement included mention of "Can't have pets in the dorm? Do you love puppies? Come Rent-A-Puppy to play with for 30 minutes! Bring your driver's license". This event was so wildly popular that passersby got on their cell phones to tell people about it. Puppies rented quick, and people started asking to make reservations. A good system will be needed to keep track of who rents a puppy, reservation time, return time, which puppy. They took driver's license as a guarantee that the puppy would be returned. They made $305 in 4 1/2 hours with 7 puppies. The event was from 10am-2:30pm, and they had to start turning people away around 1pm because all the time slots were reserved. They decided that they should have done this event two days in a row.

Interesting or Fun Facts

Originally, Play-Doh came in only one color; off-white and came in a 1.5.lb cardboard can. Joe McVicker of Kutol Chemicals had learned from a teacher that modeling clay used by children in the classrooms was often too difficult for many of the smaller children to manipulate. He remembered that his non-toxic composition he had created as a wallpaper cleaner was easy to manipulate and could possibly work as a substitute for the typical modeling clay the schools were using. He shipped a box of his cleaning composition to the school and it was a huge hit with both the teachers and the kids. He offered to supply all of the schools in the Cincinnati area with this new material, and after great reactions from those schools as well, his product was showcased at a national education convention. Word spread like wildfire and department stores began to take a serious interest. Under the banner of his new company ?Rainbow Crafts?, it was first sold in the toy department of Woodward & Lothrop Department Store in Washington, D.C. It was the first of over 900 million pounds of the squishy, salty (non-toxic) cans of the recently dubbed ?Play-Doh? to be sold over the next 50 years.
