Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month The Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary in Odessa, Texas, holds an In-House Poker Run fundraiser about 6 weekends a year and raises about $1500.00 for their state project for that year. They say that anyone can do this one. All you need is a deck of cards, a notebook and pen. All who play get to draw 5 cards from the deck any way they want (not looking at them of course). They pay $5.00 a hand and the best hand wins half of the pot at the end of the time allowed. They do it for about 5 to 6 hours per day and raise about $100.00 per time for both the winner and the charity. Everyone wants to play again and again to beat the hand before. Sometimes the pot gets to be about $400.00, depending on the size of the group. It gets to be a lot of fun and everyone likes to play poker. You could add a joker for better odds or let them pay $3.00 more for 1 more card. |

Non-Profit In The Spotlight The Sanctuary For Senior Dogs is dedicated to the rescue, adoption, and lifelong care of senior dogs abandoned in shelters and pounds. Many people automatically think of a puppy when they think of adopting a dog. Puppies are warm and cuddly, and everyone wants to hold and pet them. But puppies demand patience and energy to help them become wonderful family members and companions. Older dogs, however, can be as cute and lovable as puppies, and they often come with many wonderful qualities that puppies take years to grow into. All of our dogs live in Sanctuary-approved foster homes until a permanent home can be found. Senior dogs too ill to be safely adopted stay in a Sanctuary hospice foster home for life. |

Interesting or Fun Facts Crossword puzzles are said to be the most popular and widespread word game in the world, yet have a short history. The first crosswords appeared in England during the 19th century. They were of an elementary kind, apparently derived from the word square, a group of words arranged so the letters read alike vertically and horizontally, and printed in children's puzzle books and various periodicals. In the United States, however, the puzzle developed into a serious adult pastime. The first known published crossword puzzle was created by a journalist named Arthur Wynne from Liverpool, and he is usually credited as the inventor of the popular word game. December 21, 1913 was the date and it appeared in a Sunday newspaper, the New York World. Wynne's puzzle differed from today's crosswords in that it was diamond shaped and contained no internal black squares. During the early 1920's other newspapers picked up the newly discovered pastime and within a decade crossword puzzles were featured in almost all American newspapers. It was in this period crosswords began to assume their familiar form. Ten years after its rebirth in the States it crossed the Atlantic and re-conquered Europe. |
