사랑하는 손녀들에게

너희가 대학생이 되어 자신의 미래를 준비하는 모습을 보면서 할아버지는 참으로 대견하고 감사한 마음이 든다.
이제부터는 부모님이나 선생님의 가르침만으로 살아가는 것이 아니라, 너희 스스로 생각하고 선택하며 자신의 인생을 만들어가야 할 때다.
할아버지가 살아오면서 깨달은 몇 가지를 너희에게 꼭 전하고 싶다.
첫째, 배움을 평생 멈추지 말아라.
대학에서 배우는 지식만이 공부의 전부가 아니다. 책에서 배우고, 사람에게 배우고, 실패와 경험에서도 배워라. 많이 아는 사람보다 배움을 계속하는 사람이 결국 성장한다.
둘째, 자기 생각을 가지고 살아라.
세상에는 다른 사람의 말과 유행을 따라가는 사람이 많다. 그러나 중요한 순간에는 반드시 스스로 생각하고 판단해야 한다. 무엇이 옳은지를 생각하고, 옳다고 믿는 길이라면 용기를 가지고 걸어가라.
셋째, 사람을 소중히 여겨라.
인생에서 가장 귀한 재산은 돈이나 명예만이 아니다. 좋은 사람과의 신뢰와 사랑이 더 오래 남는다. 사람을 만날 때는 사랑과 배려와 존중을 잊지 말아라.
넷째, 약속과 신뢰를 지켜라.
작은 약속이라도 지키는 사람이 되어라. 신뢰는 쌓는 데는 오랜 시간이 걸리지만 잃는 데는 순간이면 충분하다.
다섯째, 실패를 두려워하지 말아라.
젊은 시절의 실패는 인생의 실패가 아니다. 실패를 통해 무엇이 부족했는지를 배우고 다시 일어나는 것이 중요하다.
그리고 마지막으로 할아버지가 가장 강조하고 싶은 말이 있다.
너희 자신의 삶을 살아라.
다른 사람과 비교하지 말아라.
돈이나 명예만을 인생의 목표로 삼지도 말아라.
무엇보다 **‘나는 어떤 사람으로 살아갈 것인가’**를 먼저 생각해라.
정직하게 살고, 어려운 사람을 배려하고, 옳은 일에는 용기를 내며, 맡은 일에는 최선을 다해라.
할아버지는 너희가 훗날 많은 것을 가진 사람이기보다 사람들에게 신뢰받고 사랑받는 사람이 되기를 바란다.
그리고 인생의 어느 순간 어려움이 찾아오더라도 기억해라.
바른 길이라면 쉽게 물러서지 말고,
천천히라도 끝까지 나아가라.
그것이 할아버지가 평생 마음에 품고 살아온

사랑하는 손녀들아,
너희의 앞날에는 아직 수많은 가능성이 열려 있다.
조급해하지 말고, 많이 배우고, 많이 경험하고, 좋은 사람들과 함께하며 너희만의 아름다운 인생을 만들어가거라.
할아버지는 언제나 너희를 믿고 응원한다.
사랑한다.
그리고 너희의 인생이 바르고 따뜻하기를 기도한다.

To My Beloved Granddaughters

 

Watching you become college students and prepare for your futures fills Grandpa with a deep sense of pride and gratitude.

From now on, it’s time for you to stop relying solely on the guidance of your parents or teachers; instead, you must think for yourselves, make your own choices, and shape your own lives.

There are a few things I’ve come to realize throughout my life that I’d like to share with you.

First, never stop learning.

The knowledge you gain in college is not the only form of learning. Learn from books, learn from people, and learn from failures and experiences. In the end, it is not the person who knows the most who grows the most, but the one who continues to learn.

Second, live with your own convictions.

There are many people in the world who simply follow what others say or what’s trendy. However, at crucial moments, you must always think and judge for yourselves. Consider what is right, and if you believe a path is right, have the courage to walk it.

Third, cherish people.

Money and fame are not the only precious assets in life. Trust and love shared with good people last much longer. When you meet people, never forget to show love, consideration, and respect.

Fourth, keep your promises and maintain trust.

Be someone who keeps even the smallest promises. It takes a long time to build trust, but it can be lost in an instant.

Fifth, do not be afraid of failure.

Failure in your youth does not mean failure in life. What matters is learning from your failures what you lacked and getting back up again.

And finally, there is one thing your grandfather wants to emphasize most.

Live your own life.

Do not compare yourselves to others.

Do not make money or fame your only goals in life.

Above all, first ask yourselves, **“What kind of person do I want to be?”**

Live honestly, show consideration for those in need, have the courage to do what is right, and do your best in whatever you undertake.

Grandpa hopes that, in the future, you will become people who are trusted and loved by others, rather than people who simply possess many material things.

And no matter when difficulties arise in life, remember this:

If it is the right path, do not back down easily;

even if slowly, press on to the very end.

That is the meaning of

**Jeongjeongjin (正精進)**,

which Grandpa has held dear in his heart throughout his life.

My beloved granddaughters,

countless possibilities still lie ahead of you.

Do not be impatient; learn as much as you can, gain as much experience as you can, and build your own beautiful lives alongside good people.

Grandpa will always believe in you and cheer you on.

I love you.

And I pray that your lives will be righteous and warm.
