The Great Wisdom of Life
自古以來，一般的教誨都是，人要表現堅強，不要柔弱，人要表現聰明，不要愚魯。
Over the past centuries, people have been taught to act tough without showing any feebleness and act smart without showing any stupidity.
不過，中國歷史上卻出現一位「老子」，與眾不同。
But, Laozi (an ancient Chinese philosopher who is presumably the author of Tao Te Ching [literally, the Sutra of Virtues] , the founder of philosophical Taoism, and a deity in religious Taoism ) taught something different.
人要表現柔弱，不要剛強，要表現愚魯，不要聰明，人要無為、無我、無欲、居下、清虛、自然。
According to Laozi, we had better act like a feeble person without showing toughness, act like a fool without showing smartness, take things as they are, minimize material needs, take a low profile, keep our mind clear, and follow the trend of nature.
一般人都認為剛強好哇，剛強的容易折斷，柔弱的能夠保全。
(問)比如說，你身上什麼最硬？什麼最軟？
(答)牙齒最硬，舌頭最軟。
(問)你看，到了我這年紀，牙齒全都脫落了，舌頭卻完好無恙。
Most people try to act tough, but they don't understand that tough things are easy to break. Most people don't know feebleness has a better chance to survive the crisis, either.
(Q) Let me ask a question. Which part of your body is the hardest and which part is the softest?
(A) Teeth are the hardest part and tongue is the softest.
(Q) You see. At the age like mine, most people have lost all teeth but their tongues are still in perfect condition.
(問)大樹比小草剛強吧？(答)是啊。(問)颱風來的時候，大樹經常被連根拔起，小草卻完好無恙。風無形無體，卻能夠拔屋倒樹，水可方可圓，能夠環山襄陵，這不是說明了，剛強的未必是強，柔弱的才是真正的強嗎？
(Q) Now, let us ask you another question. Do you think trees are stronger than grass?
(A) Yes, trees are definitely stronger than grass.
(Q) Big trees can be easily uprooted in heavy storms, but grass has a good chance to survive the storm. Wind is invisible and intangible, but it is powerful enough to tear down houses and uproot trees. You can shape water into whatever form you like, square or round shape. Water is seemingly week, but no one can stop it from encircling mountains and hills. These examples tell us toughness is not necessarily the strongest and feebleness actually lasts longer than toughness. Don’t you think?
一般人認為聰明好，但一個智者應該表現愚魯，大智若愚。大富翁通常深藏不露，我沒有多少財產啦！反之，一個雙手戴滿金戒，嘴裝金牙，頸掛金鍊的人，家裡可能是空空如也，只是外表裝闊的傢伙。
Many people try to act smart, but actually wise people always act stupid. People with great wisdom hardly show off what they know. Billionaires always hide their money. They tell others, “I don’t have much, just a few dollars in my pocket.” Oppositely, those who show off wealth are not necessarily billionaires. Many of them simply pretend to be wealthy.
如果想有所成就，一定要把全部的智力、精力集中在一點，而在其他方面做一個愚者才行。
If you want to accomplish something, you must concentrate on your goal with all your efforts and energy, and at the same time act like a fool for all other things.
(問)請問你，詩、書、畫、樣樣都行嗎？(答)對不起，我只懂得下棋，其他方面不行。(答)我詩、書、畫、都有研究。(問)你最精的是什麼？(答)什…麼都不精。他是圍棋第一高手呢，我只是皮毛之見，什麼都只懂一點點。
(Q) Are you good at poem, literature and painting?
(A) No, not at all. I play chess and chess is the only thing I know.
(A) I have studied poem, literature and painting for a long time.
(Q) What do you know the best?
(A) I’m not good at anything. He’s the best chess player. I don’t know much about it, just a little bit.
人不能處處裝聰明，想面面俱到，路路皆通，結果變成膚淺之知，路路不通。
Don’t pretend to be good at everything. If you try to take care of everything, you will be unable to master anything and you are not getting anywhere.
老子認為，柔弱就能謙下不爭，愚魯就能棄華取實，一切依循自然。
According to Laozi, with feebleness, we can keep a low profile and stay away from troubles, and with stupidity, we can follow the law of the nature and achieve our goal without wasting our time.
一般人只能看到事情的表面，而老子卻能看到裡面。一般人只能看到事物的正面，而老子卻能看到反面。老子的思想恢廓有容，可大可久，能處順境，也能處逆境，雖遇挫折打擊，也能承受不倒，還能迂曲轉進。老子反對物慾，講求精神生活，反對人為，講求體法自然，重視精神生活，以精神來役使物質。
Most people judge by appearance. Laozi sees things from a different standpoint and judges by the core of the things. Most people focus on the positive side. Sage Laozi never overlooks the dark side. With his broad-mindedness and open-mindedness, Laozi knows how to position himself in good times and in bad times. He also knows how to withstand setbacks and how to find an alternative route to reach his goal. Laozi cares more about spiritual life and objects to material desires. He stresses the law of the nature and objects to artificiality. He emphasizes spiritual life and controls materials using spiritual strength.
