Dear Colleague,

We are happy to update you with the most recent actions setup by the IAGG-GARN Network. It highlights IAGG's interest in older people's health and the need to promote research in many geriatric fields. Frailty is a specific sydrome that can easily be identified. With the assistance of appropriate specialists and with a few tools, Frailty prevention should be available in all health facilities around the world. We hope that these actions will raise awareness and help you implement frailty into clinical practice in your country.


1. WHO-IAGG Knowledge Network on Frailty and Sarcopenia

IAGG will lead a group of 12 experts to meet at WHO Headquarters in Geneva on October 8-9, 2014 to finalize a scientific paper on Frailty. This document is intended for the WHO Global Report on Ageing and Health (to be launched in 2015). In addition, the group will work on the development of a simplified geriatric assessment tool to be used in primary health care by non-specialized health professionals in low & middle income countries.

2. Launch of the FRAILTY.NET website

The "FRAILT.NET" website was launched during the ICFSR2014 conference in March 2014. It is an international educational resource that aims to help geriatricians, primary care physicians and other health care professionals involved in the care of older persons implement frailty into clinical practice. Frailty is a clinical state that develops as a consequence of age-related decline in many physiological systems and increases an individual's vulnerability for developing further dependency and/or mortality when exposed to a stressor. The portal will bring information on ways to identify pre-frail and frail individuals, to prevent disability, to implement frailty into clinical practice. It is also expected to treat subjects about the latest developments, updated research findings, clinical trials, new treatment approaches and of course current recommendations for the care of older persons. 3. The 4th International Conference on Frailty and Sarcopenia Research (ICFSR2015), April 23-25, 2015, Boston, USA

After Toulouse, Orlando and Barcelona, the ICFSR2015 conference will take place in Boston, USA on April 23-25, 2015. Keynotes lectures will include:
1: "Drug trail design for Sarcopenia" by Shalender BHASIN (Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA)
2: "End point for Sarcopenia drug trails" by Jack GURALNIK (National Institute on Aging, Baltimore, USA)
3: "Frailty intervention: what we have learned from the LIFE trial" by Marco PAHOR (Gainesville, USA)
4: "Definition of Sarcopenia" by Stephanie STUDENSKI (National Institute on Aging, Baltimore, USA)              
5: "Biological aspects of aging" by Jeremy WALSTON (Baltimore, USA)
6: "Frailty and sarcopenia, two sides of the same coin" by Matteo CESARI (Gérontopôle, Toulouse, France)
