Over fifty percent of charities received some holiday cheer

T’was the season for over 50% of charities, who saw a sharp increase in giving during the final two months of 2010, a Chronicle of Philanthropy poll finds. The year-end lift is one reason that many groups say total donations for the 2010 fiscal year will be higher than in 2009. Still, even with the increase in giving, many charities are not raising as much as they did before the recession began. Forty-seven percent of the organizations (not counting groups that raised money for Haiti) do not expect to raise as much this year as they did before the challenging economy. Read more.

The Teachers Rock stories have shown us that education shapes our lives in unforgettable ways. That is why United Way is making education a national priority.  United Way has teamed up with the American Human Development Project to bring you the Common Good Forecaster – an established tool that predicts the impact of education in different communities. This resource demonstrates how education is linked to health, life expectancy, voter turnout, and incarceration rates - among other community concerns. You can also use the Common Good Forecaster to investigate how meeting United Way's goal of cutting the high school dropout rate in half by 2018 will impact your community. See how educational outcomes affect us all.

BNY Mellon prepares area school children for success

BNY Mellon is providing needed school supplies to area school children. Last month, BNY Mellon and United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area teamed up for a second year to reach more than 250 children.

"We wanted to help in a way that makes an immediate difference. We understand that some families may not have the extra money it takes to provide school supplies for their children. The supply list also seems to get longer each year, so we are just trying to do our part."

Sherry Andrews, Vice President of BNY Mellon
